The Sleepyhead Range

The Importance of a New Bed

A good night's sleep can make all the difference between a great day and a hard one. A great sleep not only boosts your energy levels, it improves your immune system, makes you more mentally alert, enhances your memory and mood, and assists in slowing the ageing process.

Having a bed that is right for your body type and sleep habits is vital; yet often buying a bed is something people rush through. Spend time trying out different models and speaking to the Farmers team about your sleeping habits to help them find the right bed for you.

Considers

Purchasing a bed is an investment in your long-term health and wellbeing. For this reason alone, it's worth investing in a quality bed.

Mattress Lifespan

A mattress can deteriorate up to 75% from its original new condition after 10 years. Over time, dampness is absorbed from the air and your body, and builds up within a mattress. This dampness not only contributes to a feeling of cold when you sleep, it is also a breeding ground for bacteria and dust mites. While a mattress protector can help to slow down moisture absorption, it's still vital to purchase a new bed every 8-10 years.

Size Matters

Space around you when you sleep helps to ensure a deeper, undisturbed sleep for both you and your partner. If you're sleeping with a partner, it's recommended you should opt for at least a queen bed in size, and if needed even a king or super king to offer extra space. When choosing your bed size, it pays to think about who else might be joining you - if kids or pets often sleep with you, you may require more space.

Minimising Partner Disturbance

A small amount of movement by you or your partner can mean a disturbed sleep for the other party. A common problem for many people, partner disturbance can be minimised with Sleepyhead's modern support technologies.

Other Considerations

Think about these points when looking for a new bed or mattress.

  • Do you have allergies?
  • Do you prefer 100% natural products?
  • Do you regularly feel hot or cold when in bed?
  • Do you have a personal preference for 'feel'?

Sleepyhead provides options that take these into consideration, however if you need personalised help, please discuss your needs in store with a Farmers team member.

Bed & Mattress Buying Tips

Which Mattress Is Right For Me?

The right bed for you, whether it's plush, medium, firm, or extra-firm, ultimately depends on your individual sleeping preferences. If you're a side sleeper, a plush or soft bed provides relief to areas such as the hips and shoulders where there's more pressure. However, front and back sleepers tend to apply pressure more evenly across a wider surface and may prefer a firmer bed. It's essential to select a bed with a feel that aligns with your sleep style.

Plush

Perfect for side sleepers, plush mattresses provide the greatest level of conformity to alleviate key pressure points throughout the body.

Medium

Ideal for mixed sleepers, whose sleeping position varies throughout the night, medium mattresses conform at crucial compression points, and offers great support to assist with rest and recovery.

Firm

Great for back and front sleepers, a firm mattress is the perfect option for those who require support across a wider surface area.

Tips for Testing

  • Wear comfortable loose-fitting clothes that are easy to get on and off the beds in. Also, you never sleep in shoes, so feel free to remove them to try out the beds properly.
  • Lie the same way on the bed that you would usually sleep, whether that's your back, side or stomach.
  • 5-10 minutes spent on each bed will allow enough time to get a good feel for it.
  • Close your eyes and concentrate on how your body feels when lying on the bed. Are you comfortable? Are there any pressure points? Is your spine aligned?
  • The bed should be at least 10cm longer than the height of the tallest person using it.
  • The width of the bed should allow you to be able to put both your hands under your head without your elbows touching the edge of the mattress or the person sleeping next to you.
  • If you sleep next to your partner, it's best you go bed-trialling together. Take turns shifting about on the bed while the other lies still so you can both get a feel for what it would be like to sleep on. It's important you find a bed that works for both of you.

About The Base

When buying a new mattress, it's a good idea to purchase the matching recommended base. The base works in tandem with the mattress to provide maximum support. Using a different bed base to mattress can cause damage in the spring system and lack of support in the bed.

Finding the Right Size Bed

Sleep is essential for the body's recovery and healing. If you're experiencing sleep difficulties or fatigue during the day, it's important to evaluate the quality of the mattress you're using. Mattress size is a crucial factor in obtaining high-quality sleep and selecting the appropriate size can depend on several factors. For instance, how many people will be sleeping on the bed, the size of those individuals, whether you have children or pets that sleep in your bed, and other similar considerations.

A Complete Bedding Solution

A quality bed is the foundation of a good night’s sleep, but there’s so much more to it than that. As important to our health as good food and exercise, a good sleep comes from many factors, from the bed itself and the bedding that sits on top of it. Plus, quality bedding can add the ‘wow’ factor to a bedroom, taking it from a room in your home, to a sanctuary you won’t want to leave.

Pillows

The right pillow can make all the difference between a great night’s sleep and a rough one. A good pillow will work in partnership with your mattress, supporting your head and neck, and helping with spinal alignment. Sleepyhead offers a range of heights, shapes, and textures so you can choose the right pillow for you.

Duvets

Duvets keep you comfortable and warm, but they also regulate your body temperature for a deep and healthy sleep. There are a number of different fibre options available to suit your needs, from wool, to duck down and feather.

Protectors

Protectors keep your sleeping area hygienic and help your mattress last longer. Some protectors have extra cushioning to give your bed an added layer of comfort, or if you prefer the feel of the mattress, choose a protector without padding.

Overlays

An overlay can add a layer of luxury to your mattress, while providing additional comfort and support.

Bed Arrival and Set Up

When Your New Bed Arrives

When your new bed arrives, it may feel a little different from your old bed at first. This is simply because it will take a bit of time for your body to adjust to the new level of support and comfort your new bed has. The mattress may also feel different from the one you tried instore - this is because a new mattress will take a few weeks to wear in. Remember the mattresses in store have been tried out by many people before you, therefore wearing it in before you tried it out.

As your mattress wears in its common that it will develop impressions as it moulds to the shape of your body. This is a normal occurrence - in fact it's a good thing, as it means you'll always have the support exactly where you need it.

Assembling Base Joiners for Split Bases

The base joiners in split bases are what helps to keep them held firmly together and prevent drift as you or your partner moves. Slot the castors or glide through the hole in the joiner and into the base as illustrated in the diagram.

Bed Care and Maintenance

Caring for your bed correctly will help ensure it continues to perform at its best, giving you a great sleep for years. Here are a few tips on how to get the best out of your bed to make sure it's performing the way it should, always.

Don't

  • Don't remove border labels or tags from your mattress. They contain information to help identify the type of mattress you own, which will come in handy should you ever need future customer care.
  • Don't use any cleaning products on your mattress. The chemicals in some cleaning products can damage not only the fabric outer of your mattress, but also erode at the inner materials. To remove stains or grime simply use a clean cloth dampened with water. Don't saturate the mattress fabric; a little bit of water is fine.
  • Don't jump on your mattress or bend it, as it can damage the internal construction.
  • Don't smoke in bed, it can be a fire hazard.

Do

  • Rotate your mattress regularly to help equalise its wear.
  • Carry your mattress flat or on its side and remember it's a two-person job.
  • Always use a mattress protector to help keep your mattress clean. Wash it regularly. A waterproof mattress protector is best for kids' beds.
  • Air out your bed periodically. To do this, strip the bed and leave the linen off for a few hours to let any moisture caused by body heat evaporate from the mattress.
  • Vacuum your bed regularly to remove dust and dirt. Use a low suction so as not to damage the fabric.
  • Clean up spills and stains as soon as you can. Scrape off any soiling and mop away liquid, then using a clean cloth dampened with water, dab onto the area. Dry the mattress in the shade away from any direct heat sources. Let it dry properly before re-use.
  • Make sure all castors or base legs are firmly inserted into your new base to ensure maximum comfort and make the bed last longer.
  • Dispose of all plastic packaging from your new bed thoughtfully and appropriately. The bags are polyethylene and can be recycled, but are dangerous for young children, so it's important to dispose of them immediately.
  • If your mattress is going into storage, store it in a breathable bag.
  • When transporting your mattress or base, ensure they are packaged properly to reduce damage and condensation occurring. Condensation can cause damp and mildew and this sort of damage is excluded from the bed's warranty.

How To Turn Your Mattress

Turning your mattress helps to even out body impressions, reduce wear and tear and allow air flow to different areas of the mattress. Turn your mattress end to end once every three months. Note mattress are very heavy, so never turn the mattress by yourself.
